Unlocking energy and chemical efficiency gains from Ozone System Operations

About the project

Anglian Water is the largest water and water recycling company in England and Wales by geographic area, serving almost seven million people. Anglian Water have set themselves challenging energy, operational cost and net zero carbon goals.

Anglian Water installed drinking water ozonation treatment systems from 1990 which still operate today providing a critical public health service.

As critical assets age they present operational challenges to maintain their optimal performance. Anglian Water needed access to ozonation dynamic data to identify areas for optimisation, developing robust technical understanding from new insightful performance metrics over the seasonal treatment challenges of changing raw water quality.

Accessing this information can be a complex process, requiring expensive instrumentation. Anglian Water required an effective, affordable solution that could gather rich data from their existing PLC systems, meeting their return on investment ‘Spend to Save’ goals.

Challenges & Objectives

Anglian Water’s ozonation systems present several optimisation challenges. Ozonation machinery is complex, making it harder to identify and diagnose faults within the system. Accessing the data needed for diagnosis and optimisation typically requires new instrumentation to be installed, which quickly becomes expensive.

Furthermore, many stakeholders are involved in the operation of ozone systems. Ozone optimisation demands a collaborative venture between different teams, including water quality, supply, and operational technology departments.

datumpin’s eDM offered a unique technology to capture rich diagnostic and optimisation data from Anglian Water’s existing ozone controller systems. Connecting into the PLC network, it can unlock this vast data source without the need for new instrumentation. With such a vast array of data on one platform, datumpin also enabled the Anglian Water multi-team approach to ozone optimisation as their embedded data analyst.

Results

datumpin captured high sample rate, broad spectrum PLC data from Anglian Water’s Ozone Systems. Our team validated substantial savings through carefully considered setpoint changes that yielded net energy or liquid oxygen reductions. This would not have been possible without the high-quality PLC data accessed and curated by datumpin.

As their embedded data provider and analyst, datumpin has helped Anglian Water to generate insightful performance metrics, construct detailed cost performance baselines, and uncover large opportunities for optimisation. In addition, workflows have been developed with their Anglian Energy Efficiency and Optimisation Team to deliver validated benefits and integrate solutions without disrupting day-to-day operations.

Through data capture and analysis, datumpin has also confirmed the impact of the optimisations in the long-term. For example, by carefully exploring the beneficial impact of small adjustments to ozone concentration setpoints, the team realised GWh energy savings balancing compressor and generator electrical energy demands delivering 10% of the total Anglian companywide GWh energy goal from 2 treatment systems

Anglian Water have incorporated this learning into smart, dynamic duty management upgrades on their controller network to lock in these gains for ‘business as usual’ backed up by datumpin real-time performance monitoring.

datumpin continues to support Anglian Water to optimise and maintain their ozone systems, giving them access to essential data that would otherwise have remained hidden.
