Shaping the Next Generation of Talent: Tommy Brook’s Summer Internship
At datumpin, we are passionate about shaping the next generation of tech talent. This is evident with our internship scheme, which gives aspiring tech professionals the invaluable hands-on experience needed to get ahead in an increasingly competitive field. Internships have always been an effective tool for bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world experience, so we are proud to offer this opportunity to the next generation of tech talent who will help build the future.
Tommy’s Summer Internship
datumpin has recently brought Tommy Brooks on board for a summer internship that started on July 3rd and ends on September 30th. Tommy is a cybersecurity student at Bath Spa University who has just completed his second year. Tommy was keen to make the most of his time off this summer by applying what he has learned in the classroom to real-life challenges, so he relished the opportunity to join the datumpin team on a summer apprenticeship and an exciting new project.
IIoT & The Fourth Industrial Revolution
Tommy was particularly interested in the realm of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) - a network of interconnected devices and sensors that can communicate and exchange data in an industrial setting.
This is a subset of the Internet of Things (IoT) and part of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), a technological revolution that will transform the way that people live and work with various technologies, including AI tools, robotics, autonomous vehicles, nanotechnology, edge computing, quantum computing and virtual reality.
Our IIoT Project
It was the perfect time for Tommy to come on board with IIOT presenting a new market opportunity for us to expand our product and service scope. Currently, our solution captures data from programmable logic controllers (PLCs), but IIOT enables data to be captured from permanent remote devices and temporary measurement instrumentation synchronised with their critical control network information.
Customers will value this ability to capture data without having to connect directly to their critical control network, which can create cybersecurity concerns during a time when cyber attacks are on the rise and cloud security is a top priority for industrial businesses.
By expanding our capabilities to capture data from permanent remote devices and temporary measurement instrumentation, we can provide customers with a clear overview of their industrial equipment so that they can make smarter decisions, engage in process optimization, and perform preventative maintenance that will help to lead to better uptime and avoid the cost of repairs.
Tommy’s Role & The Two-Way Benefits of Internships
Tommy played a significant role in this project, bringing his sharp and up-to-date cybersecurity skills and knowledge to the table, helping to make sure that data networks were efficient and cybersecure. This also shows that internships work two ways - they provide aspiring professionals with invaluable real-world experience, but they also help companies like ours modernise with new insights and ideas brought to the table.
The Future
Tommy will be returning to university in October to complete his final year armed with invaluable professional experience. Our internship has helped him develop key technical skills that have been applied to a real-world project, but he has also developed key professional and soft skills that are vital for getting a foot in the door in an increasingly competitive field.
We are proud to have had Tommy as part of our team this summer and wish him all the best in his last year. We plan to keep in touch - who knows what the future holds! We are also proud to help shape the next generation of tech professionals through our internship programs, which help to shape both their future and the future of the industry.
